Winter Preparation: Protect Your Home from Water Damage and Mold Growth

10/1/2024 (Permalink)

Our certified team of experts set up containment to isolate affected areas during water damage restoration. Our team set up containment to isolate affected areas during water damage restoration. Keeping your home safe and secure throughout the process!

As the winter months approach, homeowners in Rexburg and Rigby need to prepare for the challenges that colder weather can bring. Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures increase the risk of water intrusion, which can lead to mold growth if not addressed properly. At SERVPRO of Rexburg/Rigby, we know that winterizing your home is key to preventing water and mold damage. By taking action before the season is in full swing, you can avoid costly repairs and protect the health of your home. Here’s how you can get your home winter-ready.

1. Clean and Maintain Gutters

Why it matters: During the fall, gutters fill up with leaves, twigs, and other debris. Blocked gutters can cause water to overflow, leading to foundation damage, basement flooding, or leaks in your roof, which can create ideal conditions for mold to grow.

Our Advice:

  • Clear out your gutters before winter arrives.
  • Check for any damage or sagging that may affect water drainage.
  • Make sure downspouts are directed at least five feet away from your foundation to prevent water pooling near your home.

2. Inspect Your Roof for Leaks

Why it matters: The winter months often bring heavy snowfall and ice buildup, which can exacerbate small leaks or create new ones. Water leaking into your attic or ceiling can easily lead to mold growth, especially if left unchecked.

Our Advice:

  • Inspect your roof for damaged, loose, or missing shingles.
  • Check for signs of water stains or mold in your attic.
  • Consider installing heat cables or roof rakes to prevent ice dams from forming, which can cause water to back up under shingles.

3. Seal Windows and Doors

Why it matters: Cold air and moisture can sneak into your home through poorly sealed windows and doors, raising the risk of condensation buildup. Over time, this moisture can damage wood frames, walls, and insulation, creating an environment where mold thrives.

Our Advice:

  • Apply weatherstripping or caulking around windows and doors to close any gaps.
  • Check for drafts by running your hand around the edges of windows and doors.
  • Install storm windows or invest in energy-efficient windows to further reduce the chance of moisture entering your home.

4. Insulate and Protect Pipes

Why it matters: Frozen pipes are one of the most common causes of water damage during the winter months. If a pipe freezes and bursts, it can flood your home, causing water damage and creating the perfect conditions for mold to take hold.

Our Advice:

  • Insulate exposed pipes, especially those in unheated areas like basements, garages, and crawl spaces.
  • Keep your home heated to at least 55°F, even if you’re away.
  • Turn off outdoor faucets and drain hoses to prevent freezing.

5. Basement Waterproofing

Why it matters: During winter, snow and ice can melt around your foundation, causing water to seep into your basement. This excess moisture can lead to mold growth if not properly addressed.

Our Advice:

  • Check your basement for any existing water damage or mold growth.
  • Ensure that your sump pump is working properly and install a backup battery system in case of a power outage.
  • Consider sealing any cracks in your foundation to prevent water from entering.

6. Monitor Indoor Humidity Levels

Why it matters: Mold thrives in damp, humid environments, and indoor humidity can rise during winter due to the increased use of heating systems and poor ventilation.

Our Advice:

  • Use a dehumidifier in high-moisture areas like basements, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.
  • Keep indoor humidity levels below 50%.
  • Ensure proper ventilation in areas like kitchens and bathrooms by using exhaust fans.

7. Inspect Attic Insulation and Ventilation

Why it matters: A poorly insulated attic can lead to condensation and ice dams, which may cause water leaks and, eventually, mold growth.

Our Advice:

  • Check for adequate attic insulation to prevent heat from escaping and causing snow on your roof to melt unevenly.
  • Make sure your attic is properly ventilated to allow moisture to escape.
  • Inspect your attic for any signs of mold or water damage and address them immediately.

Water damage and mold growth can quickly turn into a serious issue, especially during the winter months. A few of the things she does at SERVPRO is creates all of our social media content, organizes events, creates schedules and assists customers with job estimates and scheduling.

Our Painter

1/27/2022 (Permalink)

Philippe is our one and only painter currently and he does an absolutely phenomenal job. Philippe has been painting professionally for over 5 years and absolutely loves what he does. His favorite part of painting is watching how he can transform a space from drab to amazing with just a few simple strokes of a brush. He has painted everything from big industrial buildings to residential properties.

Philippe was raised in Arizona where he lived most of his life. He loved living there and loved all the beauty it provided. Cold winters and warm summers definitely prepared him for his life in Idaho. It was an easy transition because of all the similarities between the two states. They both have amazing mountain ranges, endless nature, and gorgeous lakes and rivers everywhere you look.

We are so happy to have Philippe and his painting skills a part of our SERVPRO family!

Winter storms bring water and mold

3/22/2021 (Permalink)

Recently winter storms have hit the lower south coast hard. Families and business owners were stranded with no place to go because of the severe damage they had faced.

Water damage from the storms had ravaged through these homes and businesses. If that wasn't enough water brought along a friend by the name of mold! With water comes mold and with mold comes a whole new set of problems. We had to work fast!

With as many homes and businesses that were affected by these winter storms, SERVPROs Storm Team had called in other franchises from out of town to help. We were lucky enough to be among those called.

We started in Oklahoma and ended in Texas. We were out there for over a month and worked day and night to help restore these wonderful peoples homes and businesses. The people in the communities were amazing even after having to go through what they did.

With our guys keeping a positive attitude we were able to get families and business owners back in their locations quickly and efficiently as possible. We are proud to say that we were able to help!

If you have a fire, water, mold, asbestos or biohazard disaster call SERVPRO today! We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for all of your cleaning and restoration needs.

We care about our community

Our owner and marketing rep with a sheriff Our owner and marketing rep with a sheriff donating money.

This year SERVPRO's marketing team got together to brainstorm on ways to help the community. Every year we come together and think about what we can possibly do to make a good impact on our local friends, family and neighbors. One of the things that we decided to go with was the Shop with a Sheriff foundation put together by Bonneville County Sheriffs Department.

We know that due to COVID a lot of people have been impacted and unfortunately may not have enough money this year to give their children a good Christmas. So we got on the phone with the police department and had them over that next day with a check made out for $600.

SERVPRO feels that looking out for your community is one of the most important things you can do!

Our marketers really are amazing! They are team players and always strive to be better at what they do. Along with that, they are helpful and always team players. With the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic affecting businesses everywhere our marketers have decided to schedule out a few days a week to help out crews out in the field.

So, they suited up in their SERVPRO uniform and went out to a fire job that we were currently in the process of cleaning. Their day entailed cleaning up after recon so the homeowners could move back into their home. They had to clean and wipe counters and cabinets, sweep and vacuum, moped flooring, cleaned inside and outside of closets, wiped down the very top of cabinets, cleaned up appliances, etc.

If you can think of the most thorough cleaning you have ever seen in your life, that’s what our team did. We are so blessed to have such amazing team players on our side.

  1. The fridge may be making a little bit too much noise.
