- Snowflakes, sweaters, hot cocoa and fireplaces are all things that people may think of when thinking about winter time. But in states that receive many inches of snow every year there are far more hidden dangers to think about. Black ice is a very big reality and can become devastating very fact if you are not prepared for it.
What is black ice? Black ice, sometimes called clear ice, is a thin coating of glaze ice on a surface, especially on roads. The ice itself is not black, but visually transparent, allowing the black road below to be seen through it.
When driving try to:
- Avoid driving over black ice
- Know when to expect black ice
- Learn to deal with a black ice encounter
It is also a good idea to keep a driving safety kit in your car during winter. These items can include a small Shovel, gloves and winter clothes, blankets, emergency flares, first aid kit, bottled waters and rock salt.
